Automated Income System

An automated income system is comprised of a marketing engine, an email campaign and digital products.

There’s more to it than that of course. But let’s back up a little!

I downloaded an ebook from eBay one day back in the early 2000’s. The ebook I purchased was a system too. It taught me how to buy and sell from eBay and make a profit. You can read about here. But the ebook download struck me as the perfect automated income system; so that’s where my journey began!

Automated Income System

After a while of using the eBay strategy I decided there must be a better and more lucrative strategy to make money through using the internet. I was buying physical products through eBay and then reselling them back on eBay. The trouble was it was a very time heavy business model. I was doing lots of searching for bargains, re-listing items and posting them out.

I wasn’t making enough money from the strategy so thought back about the eBook purchase. This struck me as the perfect business model – an automated income system and downloadable products. With downloadable products I didn’t have to physically post anything or handle anything and this saved heaps of time. Time which could be better used marketing the product.

Automated Income System

So I decided to create my own ebooks and attempted to sell them. When that didn’t work I put myself on several online marketing courses. The courses taught a business model known as affiliate marketing. Although my first intention was to learn how to sell my own ebooks, I realised that affiliate marketing was a better strategy than selling my ebooks!

So I started learning about affiliate marketing. I blogged and I used paid marketing too. Despite some small successes selling other people’s products online, I failed to make a consistent income from it. I learned the basic premise of it:

Build a landing page to collect subscribers emails
Follow up with a series of automated emails promoting products
Focus on marketing the landing page and collecting subscribers.

I suspect that’s how many affiliate marketers start out. Income at the time was very sporadic so my marketing strategy was mainly free. This meant I blogged a lot and even created videos and uploaded them to YouTube. However, despite a lot of effort, results weren’t showing. I made the odd sale but really didn’t see anything to write home about!

Paid Marketing

Paid marketing showed the most promise. One of my campaigns started showing sales every day! Unfortunately my Adwords account got shut down just before I was about to increase my marketing budget and scale up!

Back to the drawing board for me. I focused on free marketing for several years after that since I couldn’t get my account back.

Some of my content led to sales but they were too far apart to call a serious income. I just wasn’t getting any traction and I was losing motivation too and belief that it could even work! I’d tried several tactics over a few years but got nowhere. My automated income system wasn’t working!

I Found Help

Despite several years of this, I kept going for some reason. I knew there was something to this and it could work if I only took the right action steps. I just kept spending time on all the wrong activities. Despite working really hard, nothing seemed to work!

I found another video online of a guru talking about online businesses. I decided to empty my cup and start again with the mind of a beginner. Since my results were pretty poor, that’s what I was. I had learned some skills though over the years such as SEO (search engine optimisation) and building websites.

But I hadn’t figured out how to consistently make affiliate sales and build a real income online which was my main goal.

Business Model

I joined an online community who helped me set up a sales funnel with a range of digital products in it. This was an important difference to what I had done earlier. A range of products makes all the difference. This was something I hadn’t known about before. I had only sold single products for around $100 each. With an affiliate commission at 40% that gave me $40 for each sale I made.

However, this didn’t leave a lot of room for mistakes and learning. Especially when using paid marketing. A range of products gives you much more room for learning. I learned to use products which contained:

Recurring income – memberships and software products
High ticket items – gave me larger commissions and made paid marketing more possible.
Multi-tier sales – gave me an income from the sales made by my referrals
Built in sales team – closed sales on my behalf

Some of the products I was promoting offered commissions of up to $8000 on a single sale. This made all the difference.

Mindset Issues

My main problems were not what I initially thought they were either. I thought I was doing everything I could. But what I learned was that I was in my own way. My mindset wasn’t right and I was recreating problems from my past and creating more frustration and difficulties.

Removing mental baggage and blocks in my mind sounded to me like a load of nonsense. But I didn’t understand how important mindset was to building an online business. Once I was able to see my old patterns and understand how they were affecting my business, I could move past them and create routines and strategies which helped aligned my unconscious mind and conscious mind to work together.

This is such an important part of becoming an entrepreneur and building an automated income system.

Why aren’t robots making our lives easier? I’ve always had a deep suspicion of the status quo! It seemed embroiled in anger and fear and there was always a certain amount of jealousy too; particularly whenever someone was doing something different. I was a bit of a dreamer I’ll admit! At 24 I met a stuntman and decided it was the dream career. Later, I figured out that it may have a certain shelf life! I wasn’t focused on becoming a stunt co-ordinator so it left me rather without direction.

I downloaded an ebook from the internet about making money on eBay one day and realised this was going to be my future! With this simple transaction, I realised that someone had created a product (a small, digital book), put it on the internet, and automated the process of selling it. From that moment I never stopped thinking about it and the huge possibility that it held.

I decided to copy the idea of the ebook and wrote one about how to become a stuntman. It didn’t go down too well with the stunt community and definitely affected my career. But at the time I wasn’t getting any work anyway so I figured I had nothing to lose!

Later on I put myself on a course to help me learn marketing and sell other ebooks I had written. I also wrote one on becoming a TV Extra. This quickly led me to reevaluate what I was doing. The online work was paying the least for a long time, I must say. But I held out that it had the largest potential of all the income streams I had developed. I just hadn’t figured out how to get it working yet – so I told myself!

I later found a different business model and a community of online entrepreneurs. This was a massive help but I wasn’t out of the woods just yet! Despite having massive scepticism, I was able to purchase yet another course and move forwards. By this time my enthusiasm was at a massive low point.

But this time I was able to actually meet people in person, and this gave me massive confidence in what I was doing.

Of the many pitfalls in learning how to generate an income online, one of the biggest ones is not getting help. It’s easy to struggle on alone and go down many rabbit holes which lead nowhere. Choosing the wrong products to promote, the wrong kinds of traffic generation methods and spending time unwisely were some of the problems I encountered.

To make your laptop work for you, you need to build systems which you can automate and scale up to a global audience. This requires a good business model and some pretty serious patience!

Referral Programs To Make Money

Using referral programs to make money is one of the most popular online strategies. With a referral program, you can send customers to it through an affiliate link. If you make a sale you receive a commission. It’s pretty simple and straight forward. Plus, there’s no customer service or product handling on your behalf to worry about. All of the customer service and product delivery is taken care of by the third party who owns the products.

This leaves the question of how. How do you get customers to purchase products through your referral link? And which programs/products do you choose to promote in the first place?

Referral Programs To Make Money

Lets start with the “how?”. There’s many ways to promote goods and services over the internet. All of the main strategies fall into two main categories:

Paid marketing – Google, Facebook, YouTube, etc. Paid marketing is expensive so you’ll need a good return on investment (ROI) in order to use this strategy.

Physical products tend to pay much less than their digital counterparts too. A typical physical product from Amazon for example will pay out a referral commission of somewhere between 3% and 11%. For some digital products it’s as much as 50% commission on a sale.

A cheap strategy of marketing such as building a blog also takes some time. However, if you’re successful you can generate sales without paying for marketing. Eventually, if you stick at it, your blog can generate free traffic (visitors) and sales.

Regardless of which marketing strategy you choose, most affiliate marketers use an email autoresponder. An autoresponder allows a marketer to collect email addresses and keep in touch with their website visitors and potential customers. Which Products?

There’s so many products you can choose to sell as an affiliate marketer; which ones do you choose? As a referrer of products it’s a good idea to choose products which you yourself would personally buy. This is true for a few main reasons:

If you’re creating content to help people make a buying decision, it’s a good idea to choose items which you’re personally involved with and know something about.
It’s much harder promoting products you don’t have a clue about!
You can be more genuine and congruent in your sales messaging if you’ve personally bought and had value from something you’re promoting.
Imagine someone recommending a restaurant to you, but they haven’t gone themselves – they just want the commission. Do you go? Affiliate marketing, or referral marketing is similar to this. Except you get paid for recommendations.

Types Of Products

There’s many types of products online to choose from as an affiliate marketer. Ideally choose products you have already purchased and would recommend. Digital products tend to pay more than physical products: 40% compared to 3-10% typically. Then there’s recurring income affiliate programs and high ticket programs. Many bloggers and video marketers choose affiliate programs or products which match their interests. That way they can continue to create content around their interest while promoting affiliate products. This is a good idea if you’re going down the free marketing route. The key to making money with referral programs is to automate and scale the process. You can easily get lost in the process of becoming an affiliate marketer and lose your way! Automating the process either means paying for marketing or creating daily habits which build up your online presence over time. So if you’re using paid marketing to send traffic to a site, a landing page is a good idea. This also depends on the type of business you have.

Some online business owners offer multiple opt-in options on their website. This might include a pop-up or a drop down opt-in link which alerts visitors to a valuable offer.

There’s many ways to do affiliate marketing and not all strategies work as well as each other. The easiest online money making system for a beginner is never the cheapest either. Affiliate marketers sell products over the internet and earn commissions based on what they sell. To give yourself an edge as an affiliate, it’s wise to get the best knowledge and follow a path which is working already for the top affiliates. Having a mentor is a good plan, especially when there’s so many different strategies to follow. You could spend years trying them all and still get nowhere, especially without a mentor.

Here’s a few tips which should help you make better decisions when building an affiliate business:

Get an affiliate marketing mentor – this could save you years of struggle
Digital products not physical products – digital products pay out 30%-50% commissions compared to 3-11% for physical products.
Recurring income affiliate programs – get paid on autopilot monthly for each sale of a membership or subscription product.
Use paid marketing – paid marketing is the fastest and easiest way to build a reliable income from the internet – (but you need the right products to do this).
Choose a high ticket product range – a range of products is far better than using only a single product and will give you a larger ROI (return on investment) than small value digital or physical products.

A good advert should be able to bring a scalable number of people to a website landing page where their details can be collected. Using paid marketing is a good idea not just because it’s easy to gain traffic instantly, but also because it’s scalable. With content marketing it’s much more difficult to increase your views instantly, and it takes much longer to gain traction.

A landing page is a page specifically designed to collect your subscriber’s information. On a website, visitors can look around, click on many pages and have many options. On a landing page they only have two options: leave or sign up! When you’re paying to get people to your content online it’s a good idea to get their email address.

When someone lands on a website, they only have a few minutes to decide whether to buy from you or not. But once you collect their email address you can dramatically extend this time period. Someone can buy from you even years after signing up to your email list.
