Can you completely autopilot marketing automation so that your business is running by itself? Is it possible to “autopilot” your marketing, so that you have customers coming in and buying products without you having to lift a finger? This is not only totally possible but many online business owners use such a system to revolutionise their lives.

email marketing - used for automated messages

Through the use of a clever business model called affiliate marketing, anyone can sell products and services globally without having to personally own or handle products or even deal with a customer. To automate the sale of products and services online, you can employ the use of marketing strategies which can be automated and scaled up globally, too.

These are a few of the strategies which can be automated completely and scaled up globally:

  • PPC – pay per click marketing platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Adwords, Bing etc. are used to find customers both locally and globally
  • Email marketing – if you’re not yet using email marketing in your advertising, you should definitely get an email autoresponder and begin to use it.
  • Re-targeting is used to show advertising to people who have already interacted with your business somewhere, usually after landing on your website.
  • SEO – search engine optimisation can be used to help generate organic traffic from the search engine results pages (SERPS)
  • Content marketing – blogging or video blogging is used to generate traffic for free from the SERPS

Autopilot: Marketing Automation: PPC

Pay per click advertising is the fastest (and most scalable) way to generate traffic to your website. However, before you spend a fortune on ad campaigns, you’ll want to know whether it works! Otherwise you can easily spend a heap on traffic that doesn’t convert into customers.

To get a campaign started you can begin with Google Adwords. Open an account and head to campaigns. You will see a big plus button where you can get started. Create a campaign which targets your perfect customer. That is the people most likely to want to buy whatever you are selling.

Before you get started here, it’s worth mentioning your customer avatar. The perfect customer who is most suitable for your offering. Before creating a pay per click advertising campaign, you’ll want to know who your target audience is. Without this information, you can easily spend a lot of money for nothing. See customer avatar worksheet pdf for more on this.

Autopilot Marketing Automation: Your Business Model

Your business model is important when considering how you will be marketing it too. If you’re selling low value products, it will be more difficult using the more expensive marketing platforms such as YouTube and Facebook, for example. With the most profitable digital products in your sales funnel, such as high ticket and subscription products, it is much easier to turn a profit when using paid advertising.

That’s not to say paid advertising is a breeze. It definitely isn’t. You may need to run several advertising campaigns before you hit upon a profitable one. Once you do though, you can leave it running indefinitely; when you recognise an advertising campaign as consistently profitable. When this happens you can duplicate your campaign and scale it up, globally if appropriate for your business.

Depending on your business model and marketing budget, you can use multiple marketing tactics together to create an automated marketing strategy.

Autopilot Marketing Automation: Strategy Vs Tactics

There’s many digital marketing tactics such as blogging, pay per click, email marketing, social media and SEO (search engine optimisation) to name just a few. But a single tactic is not the same as a strategy. The most effective digital marketing strategies use a combination of multiple tactics combined together. An example is to use blogging with email marketing, or pay per click advertising with re-marketing. All of these tactics can be successfully combined to create an overall marketing strategy which beats all of them individually.

With paid marketing methods, this is can be quickly automated and scaled. With organic marketing such as content creation, there’s more work involved in the first instance. But over time content can continue to attract your target audience and bring them into your sphere of influence.

Email Messages & Landing Pages

Email messages can be automated for years in advance if you wish, using an email autoresponder. By using a paid marketing platform to drive traffic to a landing page, online marketers collect email subscribers in order to follow up with their marketing messages.

By split testing landing pages to find the best converting design, marketers can cut marketing costs to ensure a more profitable marketing funnel. A simple software can be used to create similar landing pages and split test them against each other to optimise for best performance. A good landing page software is Convertri. With Convertri, you can easily copy landing pages to split test them for effectiveness.

Summary

Autopilot marketing is used in businesses everywhere. More so than ever, businesses large and small are employing the tactics of digital marketing.

Even on a small budget, anyone can obtain an email autoresponder which can allow them to automate email message follow ups to engage with their subscribers. This lets them more efficiently build a larger customer base automatically.

Using PPC – pay per click marketing platforms such as Adwords, Bing, YouTube and Facebook can also be started with a smaller budget. Any business can use digital marketing tactics like these to grow.

Using re-targeting is another effective business strategy which can be used by large and smaller businesses alike. All these strategies can be automated and scaled according to your business needs, and on a budget which suits you.

Autopilot email marketing is one of the best ways to grow an existing business or build an online business. With an email autoresponder, you can build a list of subscribers from a website. You can also automate a marketing campaign to your subscribers. It’s a simple and straight forward way to collect prospective customers; and keep in touch with them through a series of email messages.

Online business owners know the value of building relationships. Since many of them don’t even see their customers personally, “in the flesh”. So using email is their best tool for doing this. Plus, it’s a system which can be scaled up to an ever growing audience. Whereas scaling up personal relationships is a much more difficult challenge!

Using An Autopilot Email Marketing “Autoresponder”

An autoresponder software lets you place some code on your website and collect your visitor’s email address through a form. Usually the website owner will offer some kind of free giveaway to encourage their visitors to opt-in. This email then joins the database of all your subscribers. You can then automate a number of campaigns or series of emails to be sent out to your subscribers.

autopilot email marketing

Online business owners use this strategy to build a huge list of subscribers: into the tens of thousands. They can then send out a single email and sell hundreds if not thousands of digital products simultaneously. The advantage of digital products is that they can be sold to anyone globally, regardless of their location. Physical products have more limitations and you, or a distribution company need to physically post out the product/s.

As many business owners know, people won’t keep opening your emails unless you have proved yourself to offer some legitimate value, or your subscribers are hungry for your product already. So the main focus for many who use autoresponders is offering value to their subscribers. 1000 people who are hungry for the next email, are potentially worth far more than a list of 10,000 who don’t open any!

So to keep your subscribers interested, it’s a good idea to build relationships through your emails. How you do this depends on you, your particular business model and your products and/or service.

Autopilot Email Marketing – Extending The Sale “Window”

autopilot email marketing

On a website, your visitors only have a small “window” of opportunity to see the value of your products or service, and make a purchasing decision. This is fine when they come to your website as a hungry buyer, knowing what you are selling. But perhaps they are just browsing. Or, they might not know the full value of what your products can offer them. Some people will also want to gather information before they make a purchasing decision. They might even buy from a competitor, at a later date.

To make sure they have more opportunities to buy from you, you should offer some kind of incentive on your website. Many businesses offer a discount code or some freebie ebook or digital download of some kind. This encourages their visitors to opt-in to their email subscribers list. From here, you can continue contacting your subscriber and give them more value and information on an on-going basis. When they come to make a buying decision, they are more likely to buy from the person who has put in the most effort at building a relationship with them, and has already given them huge value.

Someone on a website has only perhaps 10 minutes to make a purchasing decision. Once you have them on your email list, this time period os extended into days, weeks, months and even years and decades.

Testing and Measuring Your Opt-in Rate

Once you have your sign up form on your website, you’ll want to try out different approaches to encourage your website visitors to opt in. This can involve adding pop-ups, giving away free downloads or even just changing the wording on your offer to make it more appealing. See increase conversion rate on your e-commerce website. By testing and measuring different opt-in offers, you can see, over say 1000 views or so, which offers are most appealing to your visitors.

Ideally, focus on promoting the benefits of your offer, rather than the features. Focus on WIIFM “what’s in it for me?” This can be a difficult thing when you know so much about your product or service. But ultimately the customer doesn’t care much about WIIFM! A short benefit driven heading can work the best to encourage your visitors to opt in to your email marketing campaign. And make sure your offer is clearly visible on every page of your website – not hidden at the bottom or somewhere which is difficult to see.

Opt-In Options To Consider

An autopilot email marketing campaign starts with your opt-in offer. So it’s important to make it clearly visible and of course valuable and congruent with what your visitors want. Most autoresponder software programs offer a range of pop-up, slide-in or “hover” forms which you can use to grab the attention of your website visitors. In some cases a pop-up is a useful way to do so. But there are downsides too.

A pop-up might slow down your website load speed, which in turn can affect your traffic. If Google downgrades your site for some reason, this will effect the number of visitors you can attract through blogging and creating content. Pop-ups can affect this because they affect the user experience. So it’s worth keeping this in mind if you’re considering using a pop-up lead magnet form.

Autopilot marketing has got to be the best kind of marketing for small or online business owners. But what does it mean to “autopilot” your marketing for a business and how can you get started?

There’s lot of ways to use online marketing for a business. In this article I’m going to cover some methods and strategies which can be set up to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on complete autopilot.

Let’s start with a great free strategy which every small business owner should implement to get free customers for their business.

Autopilot Marketing – Google My Business

Google My Business is a free service for locally based businesses run by, you guessed it, Google! With Google My Business, you can set up a profile and list your business just by entering some details and verifying your listing. Google will send out a PIN number in the post for you to verify your business. Once you’ve filled out your profile and confirmed your postal address, you get a free listing which can bring in customers, for free, for years to come.

autopilot marketing - Google My Business/ Google Places

To see just how powerful this listing can be, just do a local search for plumbers or handymen in your area. You should see a listing with maps for your nearest tradesmen. These listings are absolutely free and offered as a service by Google. Although some listings or adverts appear in the listings above these at times, it’s worth the hour or so of your time it takes to create a listing, if you have a locally based business.

Cheap Automated Marketing – Building A Niche Website

Here’s another top cheap strategy for locally based businesses especially. If you haven’t already got a website, or, even if you have, you can build a site around your main keywords to get free traffic from Google organic searches. I’ve implemented this strategy for a number of clients with great success. This works particularly well for local businesses because you can target your location and business keywords in your domain name.

Start out by using the Google keyword planner to search for your business keywords and location. This can give you an idea of the most searched for terms in your location which relate to your business. For example “Handyman In Bingley”, or “Bingley Handyman”. Then go to Google search and type in that same keyword in “quotes”.

autopilot marketing - checking your competition

As you can see, this brings up a number at the top which relates to the competing pages for this particular keyword phrase. Some towns and businesses will have more competition than others. But in many cases, it’s worth building a site around these keywords. You’ll have a very good chance of ranking a website on the first page and getting some free customers. Just make sure to build a good site too as this will help. See Create Free Website And Make Money for more on this strategy and How To Build A Niche Website And Get Free Traffic.

Google Adwords, Bing, Yahoo

The fastest and arguably easiest way to build your business is with paid for marketing strategies. The first platform you can look at is Google’s Adwords. Adwords lets you create adverts specific to keyword searches which are targeted towards your business, or a business like it. When you create an advert through Google Adwords, your advert pops up only for the keywords you specify.

So, if you have a shoe repair shop in Manchester, you can specify your advert to only show when people search for those exact keywords. There will also be a number of other relevant searches which you can use to find customers for your business. Use the keyword planner to find keywords relevant to your business and then ‘plug’ them into your advertising campaign.

Be aware though that you can inadvertently show your advert for keywords which don’t directly relate to your business. So you should learn how this platform works by starting with a low daily marketing budget which you can afford to lose. As you get better at it, you’ll know which adverts bring in business and which ones you should shut down. Eventually you’ll be able to autopilot marketing based on what you’ve learned. Once you have a number of profitable adverts running on one platform, such as Adwords, you’ll be able to move on and do the same on Bing or Yahoo which offer a similar service.

Autopilot Marketing – Testing And Measuring

There’s many more marketing platforms too including Instagram, Facebook and YouTube for example. But it’s worth learning one platform well before moving on to another one. Ultimately, once you learn how to market with one platform, you can leave your profitable adverts running, and move on to another to repeat the process.

To learn which adverts are profitable takes a little getting used to. You’ll need to track your adverts and know where your new customers come from. Otherwise, you won’t know which adverts work and which ones don’t. Tracking adverts is the key to learning from the data you get. Unless you do this, you’ll be unable to make better decisions and scale up successfully once you find the right adverts. For more on this see The Ultimate Guide To Online Marketing.

Autopilot Marketing – Blogging

Although blogging takes more time and effort than most of the methods mentioned here, it still has a huge potential to generate free traffic and attract customers. If you have a passion for your business and what you offer, you should definitely consider building a blog to extend your reach from organic traffic from the internet. Even if you only wrote a few specifically titled articles, targeting specific keywords and phrases in your niche, it can have a great effect; especially in an uncompetitive business niche.

Start out by using Google’s keyword planner as in the case for building a niche site (see above). Type in your main keywords and the planner will bring up all the related keywords which are already being searched for in your business niche. Compare the amount of monthly searches for these keywords with a quick “phrase” match (in quotes) on Google search.

Depending on your business, and the relative competition, you can find long tail keywords to write about. If you create some good content, these articles can find their way to the top of Google’s search results and bring in some free business. This takes some time and research but once you’ve built some quality content around some good uncompetitive keywords, it can bring in business for years to come – another autopilot marketing strategy to add to your collection!
